We celebrated when Energy Secretary Ed Miliband borrowed our campaign phrase from 2023 and said he'll unleash a "rooftop revolution". Now following our recent campaign win on new-build homes, we need to keep up the momentum for action.
The government is set to announce its 'Solar Roadmap' soon, which will outline how the UK can overcome barriers to expanding clean energy, among them skills and access to the electricity grid. In the midst of a frenzy of planning reforms affecting renewable energy, it's time to get smart on solar.
Whether you want solar over your own home, are keen to see your local supermarket decked out in rooftop solar, or are concerned about the solar farm proposal down the road – you can help us push for real change.
Here are our three priority asks for what the rooftop revolution should look like:
-
Deliver on plans for solar panels to be fitted on all new-build homes in England by 2027, including affordable and social rent homes
-
Put an end to ‘wasted space’ and retrofit all suitable domestic, commercial and public buildings with rooftop solar, particularly warehouses and car parks
-
Strengthen policy so that solar development is not put on our most beautiful and tranquil landscapes or our best and most versatile farmland
We don't want rooftop solar to be seen as small change. With the right policy and incentives, it has the potential to power millions of homes and businesses across the country for the long term.
We’ll be holding the government to account so that this rooftop revolution is taken up as the smartest solution. Let’s turn these dead zones into power zones – are you with us?
