The planning system works best when it gives local people a say. But the government’s new Planning & Infrastructure Bill is trying to push communities out.
Right now, local planning committees give people the right to speak to elected councillors about developments that would impact on their local area. This leads to better decision making and builds trust in the planning process.
The government wrongly blames local planning committees for slowing down housebuilding and want to curb their role in the planning system.

In reality, the big developers are at fault. They hoard planning permissions, currently for more than 1.4 million new homes, and drip-feed unaffordable properties onto the market to maximise profit.
The proposed legislation would strip communities of their right to speak, hand yet more work to under-resourced planning officers and make it easier for developers to back out of promises to build affordable and social rented homes or to follow local design standards.
This is a critical moment. As the Planning and Infrastructure Bill moves through Parliament, we have a chance to fix the system and put what communities need first.
