The countryside on the edge of our towns and cities is part of everyday life. It’s where children explore, where people walk and cycle, where food is grown and wildlife survives alongside busy communities. 

But it is also being overlooked at a time when we need it most. 

More than half of people believe the countryside will be less well protected in ten years’ time than it is today. 

These landscapes could play a vital role in restoring nature, reducing flood risk, supporting food systems and improving mental health. Yet as pressures on land increase, they are too often treated as spare space — rather than essential infrastructure. 

On the Edge is a call to recognise their value and secure their future. 

We believe every town and city should be surrounded by countryside that is protected, properly planned and able to thrive — for nature, climate and wellbeing.
