CPRE's hedgerow campaign - #40by50

The UK hedgerow network in its expanse is our largest nature reserve. The unique environmental, economic, and social benefits of our hedgerows make them essential key workers of our countryside. But around half our hedgerows have been lost since the end of the Second World War - leaving us vulnerable to the threats of climate change and air pollution, while intensifying nature’s decline.

This is why CPRE launched the #40by50 campaign, calling on the government to commit to significant hedgerow planting and restoration to increase the extent of UK’s hedgerows by 40% by 2050 - as recommended by the Climate Change Committee.

Become a Parliamentary Hedgerow Hero

As a Parliamentary Hedgerow Hero, I support:

1) A national target of 40% increase in hedgerow cover by 2050 to help address the biodiversity and climate emergencies.

2) The inclusion of a landscape criterion in the Hedgerows Regulations (1997).

3) An ELMS that makes healthy hedgerows an attractive option for the agricultural sector.
