Tell the government: no new coal mine in Cumbria

No new coal mine in Cumbria

Coal is the single biggest contributor to the greatest threat to our countryside: the climate emergency.

But in 2022, despite hosting a critical international summit on climate action barely two months ago, the government could still give the green light to a new coal mine in Cumbria – the first of its kind in over 30 years.

Set to produce more emissions than all the country’s currently-open coal mines combined, the mine would blow a hole in our efforts to tackle the climate emergency. Areas of precious woodland and local countryside will be obliterated if it goes ahead.

Pressure from you forced the government to step in and review the mine last year, but now, with the final decision on the table, it’s up to us to stop it for good. And we have a matter of weeks to act.

Will you tell the government to refuse the Cumbria coal mine for good?

Burning coal is the dirtiest, most polluting way to produce energy. It creates more local air pollution than any other source. It harms humans, wildlife and the countryside around us.

But despite the UK’s aim to completely phase out coal by 2035, the government could scupper all the chances we have of meeting our climate targets by approving this new mine.

Very soon, Michael Gove will make his final decision on whether to approve or refuse the Cumbria coal mine. This is our chance to put the final nail in the coffin for new coal in the UK.

Will you join the final push?
